The Republic of Korea’s government has unveiled a brand-new electronic passport (e-passport) program with improved security features. Beginning in July 2008, all new and renewal passports will be electronic versions.

Required Documents

  • The application form and fingerprinting must be completed in person at our office.
  • Bring both a copy of the photo page and your genuine passport.
  • Bring both a copy of the front and back of your green card AND your actual green card.
  • Two passport photos (must be Korean-standard and size of 3.5cm x 4.5cm)

Procedure / How to apply and obtain a Korean Passport?

  • The e-passport takes 3–4 weeks to process because of the high volume of requests. You must come to our office to sign for and pick up your new passport after it has been processed.
  • You will be required to sign a waiver at the time of application if you are unable to visit the consulate again to pick up your passport.
  • Please let the passport official know that you want your passport returned by mail once it has been processed. When submitting your application, you must include a postage-paid Express mail envelope if you do not object to having your passport mailed to you. No tracking receipts are accepted in plain envelopes.

Types of Passport

1. Official passport

  • issued to government employees and National Assembly members.

2. Diplomatic passport

  • issued to citizens serving in diplomatic capacities and diplomats. These passports ensure preferential treatment abroad.

3. Ordinary passport

  • Depending on the age of the holder, standard passports have a validity period of one, five, or ten years.
