About Brunei
Brunei is an independent Islamic sultanate on the northern coast of the Southeast Asian island of Borneo. It is a Commonwealth and ASEAN member. It is bounded to the north by the South China Sea and to all other sides by the East Malaysian state of Sarawak, which also divides the state into two disconnected and unequally sized segments. Brunei has a land area of 5,765 km2, making it slightly larger than twice the size of Luxembourg or slightly smaller than the state of Delaware in the United States. The country’s population is 417,200 people (in 2015). Bandar Seri Begawan is the country’s capital. Apart from Singapore, Brunei ranked higher on the Human Development Index (43 overall) than all other Southeast Asian countries. Bruneians are entitled to free education and medical care from the government. Brunei has excellent roads and infrastructure. Local buses and taxis are the most cost-effective modes of transportation due to an abundance of oil and low fuel prices. Brunei’s official religion is Islam. Brunei’s currency is the Brunei dollar (BND).
