About Kiribati
Kiribati (pronounced Kiribas) is an independent republic within the Commonwealth of Nations, located at the heart of the Pacific Ocean where the Equator and International Date Line (Prime Meridian) meet. As the only island nation in the world to be located on all four of the hemispheres, it is the largest island in the Western Hemisphere and one of the smallest in the Eastern Hemisphere. It is a part of Micronesia, a division of the Pacific islands.
The Gilbert Islands, PIPA (Phoenix Islands Protected Area), and the Line Islands are the three island groups that makeup Polynesia. With an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) that extends over 3 million square kilometers, Kiribati is a landlocked nation surrounded by water. The yellow-bellied frigatebird is a symbol of both power and liberation.
Why it is famous?
- Only Kiribati can claim to be located in each of the four major hemispheres.
- One of the most famous sites on South Tarawa is the highest point on the atoll. You’re unlikely to need hiking boots or suffer from altitude sickness since it’s only 3 meters above sea level.
- One of the best places to eat fish in Kiribati is on Abatao, the first North Tarawa island that isn’t connected by a road.
- On an area, roughly the size of India, the country of Kiribati stretches out across the ocean.
- Only 17 countries worldwide, including Kiribati, acknowledge the Republic of China, also known as Taiwan, as a sovereign state.
