About Latvian

As the middle Baltic state, Latvia is located in northern Europe. NATO and EU membership was granted to Latvia in 2004, making it the first Baltic state to join both organizations. Riga is Latvia’s capital and largest city.

On its northern border is Estonia, on its eastern border Russia, on its southeast border Belarus, and on its southern border Lithuania. Latvia is roughly the size of Greece or the US state of West Virginia. As a result, it has a wide variety of landscapes: beaches, rivers and lakes, swamps, and forests. Each of Latvia’s four major regions has its own name: Kurzeme, Latgale, Vidzeme, and South Latvia (Zemgale).

Why Latvia is famous

  • Riga, Latvia’s capital and often referred to as the “Paris of the North,” is home to nearly one-third of the country’s two million residents.
  • For the first time, any European country other than Poland and Lithuania had a higher percentage of its population killed in the Second World War than Latvia.
  • There are 12,000 rivers and 3,000 small lakes in Latvia, making it a great place for boating enthusiasts.
  • Latvia is one of Europe’s greenest countries, with 54 percent of its land covered in forest and 10 percent covered in bogs (so pack your wellies).
  • Depending on the season, Venta Rapid in Kuldga is Europe’s widest waterfall, measuring up to 270 meters.
  • Traditionally, Black Balsam is made from 24 different plants, including flower buds, juices from roots, oils from oils and berries, and tinctures from herbs and spices.

How to apply for a Latvian Visa?

  • Latvian consular missions in foreign countries or consulates of other Schengen Member States that process visa applications for travel to Latvia are required to obtain a visa prior to entering the country.
  • Latvian consulates and embassies are the only locations where an employment visa can be obtained.
  • Foreigners can apply for short-term visas and transit visas at the state border control points of the Republic of Latvia if the state’s interests, force majeure, or humanitarian considerations justify their application.
  • A visa application form is filled out and signed (vizas.pmlp.gov.lv).

Documents required

  • Must carry a valid travel document
  • an online application form filled out and signed;
  • A photograph
  • Foreigner’s financial documents certifying that he or she has the ability to pay;
