About Lesotho

Southern Africa’s Lesotho. For centuries, Lesotho has been protected from encroachment by the high mountains that surround it and keep it isolated.

Despite being completely surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho has endured decades of tumultuous politics, periodic economic crises, and grinding poverty since it gained independence from Great Britain in 1966.

The King lost all executive authority and was barred from participating in political affairs when a new constitution was implemented in 1993, 23 years after military rule began.

Why Lesotho is famous

  • Lesotho is, in fact, a country within a country, as it is encircled by South Africa on all sides. To put it another way, it’s about 300 miles south of Johannesburg, which is about a half-hour flight away.
  • With an area of 11,720 square miles, it is the 137th-largest country in the world but is only slightly smaller than Belgium (11,787 square miles) and slightly larger than Albania (11,100 square miles) or Macedonia (11,100 square miles) (9928 square miles).
  • There are 3,700 miles of roads in Lesotho, making it one of the smallest road networks in the world. Despite this, it has grown tremendously over the last 50 years.
  • One of only a handful of sovereign states whose entire territory extends above the altitude of 1,000 meters (3,281ft).
  • There are many national parks in South Africa, including Ts’ehlanyane National Park, which is the country’s largest and is located in the Maluti Mountains. It’s truly out of the ordinary.
